RESEARCH OF ARTILLERY ITEMS FROM THE XIV–XVIII CENTURIES DURING AN ART HISTORICAL EXAMINATION

The features of conducting an art historical examination of artillery items of the XIV–XVIII centuries are considered, an important stage of which is authentication. Attention is focused on the stages of attribution of guns, namely, on the features of establishing their authenticity, place and time of manufacture. The features of the structural structure, manufacturing technologies and stylistic features of decoration that must be paid attention to when determining the authenticity of the items are highlighted. The main markers that are allowing to identifying the place of manufacture of the gun are described. The features that should be paid attention to when determining the authorship of the casting (forging) and (or) the customer of the gun are outlined. When determining the belonging of the weapon to a particular time, the need to rely on certain features that were characteristic of a particular period of the historical development of artillery is emphasized. Attention is focused on some features of the structure and decoration of the weapon that should be paid attention to when dating the item, their superficial analysis is carried out. Some types of material science studies are highlighted that additionally allow confirming the dating of the weapon under study. The main features of epigraphy and marking of artillery monuments and their informative content are described. The main stages of metric measurements and description of weapons during art historical examination are determined, a unified form for describing a cannon is proposed. The main typical classification features and their criteria during research are highlighted, which allow to attribute cannons to cultural values. Recommendations are given regarding the determination of the value of an artillery item of the XIV–XVIII centuries submitted for research. Conclusions are drawn about the importance of developing a methodology for studying firearms during art historical examination.
