RESEARCH INTO SIGNS OF ALTERATION OF ELECTRONIC FILES IN COMPUTER-TECHNICAL FORENSIC EXAMINATION

The article addresses the issue of establishing signs of alteration of electronic files within computertechnical forensic examination. It is substantiated that the examination of such signs cannot be limited to viewing the visible content of a file or individual properties displayed by an operating system or application software. In order to determine the nature of changes, the expert should examine the file content, metadata, file attributes, timestamps, hash values, log files, backup and temporary copies, autosave records, software environment data and other related electronic data. It is emphasized that an expert conclusion regarding signs of alteration of an electronic file must be based on a comprehensive analysis of technical data rather than on a single technical indicator. The limits of the expert opinion are defined: a forensic expert establishes technical signs of changes, their nature and the possible sequence of operations performed, but does not provide a legal assessment of a person’s actions.
